In a bold move, Elon Musk is requiring banks and consulting firms involved in SpaceX’s upcoming initial public offering (IPO) to subscribe to his AI chatbot service, Grok. According to a recent report from The New York Times, this directive is aimed at ensuring that all parties engaged in the IPO process have access to the latest AI tools. Sources familiar with the situation revealed that firms including banks, law firms, and auditors are obliged to invest in Grok subscriptions as part of their collaboration with SpaceX. Some institutions are reportedly committing tens of millions of dollars to adopt the AI service, which they are already beginning to implement within their technological frameworks. This requirement comes on the heels of SpaceX filing IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing occurred shortly after SpaceX acquired xAI, the company that developed Grok. Notably, xAI also purchased the X social network in March 2025. While Grok has gained recognition among individual users due to its integration with X, it also offers specialized versions tailored for business and enterprise use. The timing of this IPO is crucial for Grok, particularly as the technology faces scrutiny related to investigations and lawsuits concerning inappropriate content generation. Insiders indicate that Musk has emphasized the importance of these subscriptions, highlighting their role in the IPO strategy. Additionally, while there was a suggestion for banks to promote their services on X, Musk's insistence on the Grok subscription took precedence.
