Elon Musk says copycats are why Tesla can't unveil Optimus sooner

Elon Musk has expressed a strong desire to showcase Tesla's advancements, particularly the Optimus V3 humanoid robot, but he remains wary of potential rivals eager to replicate his innovations. During Tesla's recent earnings call, investors inquired about the anticipated unveiling of Optimus, which Musk has touted as 'Tesla's biggest product ever.' He emphasized the extensive work involved in reconfiguring the production lines for the Model S and Model X at the Fremont factory to accommodate the new robot. Musk highlighted the challenges posed by competitors who meticulously analyze Tesla's releases, stating, 'We're also a little hesitant to show V3 off because we find our competitors do a frame-by-frame analysis whenever we release something and copy everything they possibly can.' He believes there is strategic merit in withholding new technology until it is almost ready for mass production. Production for Optimus is expected to commence in late July or August at the Fremont factory, with plans for an additional production line at Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin. According to Tesla's shareholder presentation, the Fremont facility aims to produce one million robots annually, while the Austin site is projected to ramp up to ten million robots per year. Musk indicated that the Austin factory might begin its production of Optimus by the summer of 2027. Earlier this year, Tesla announced it would stop the production of the Model S and Model X to make way for the Optimus assembly at Fremont. He mentioned that testing is advancing, and Optimus could potentially carry out tasks outside Tesla's factories by next year. However, Musk cautioned about the timeline, stating that dismantling the existing production lines and installing new ones will take several months. 'If we're able to go from stopping production on one line, dismantling that entire line, reinstalling a whole new line, and turning that on in a matter of four months, that is an insanely fast speed,' he said. Regarding Optimus' functionality, Musk shared that the robot would initially focus on basic factory tasks, infused with significant intelligence to operate independently, albeit under guidance. He likened its operation to that of a manager overseeing a team, suggesting that the robot would require an orchestration AI, which will be powered by Grok, the AI chatbot created by xAI. Musk noted that the interaction between Grok and Optimus would likely be limited, allowing the robot to perform tasks for extended periods without direct supervision.
