‘That’s in your nature’:  Elon Musk fires back after Sam Altman’s X Post on Tesla Roadster wait

Elon Musk has pushed back against claims made by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, regarding a refund for a canceled Tesla Roadster reservation, reigniting a highly publicized feud between the two tech giants. Altman took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share screenshots of his 2018 reservation, expressing his eagerness for the vehicle but noting that waiting 7.5 years felt excessive. He mentioned that his request for a $50,000 refund went unanswered. In a response on social media, Musk accused Altman of leaving out crucial details, asserting that the refund had been processed. "And you forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours. But that is in your nature," Musk remarked. The Tesla Roadster was first unveiled in 2017, with an anticipated production date set for 2020, but has faced numerous delays. Recently, Musk stated that Tesla is "getting close" to showcasing a prototype, promising that the forthcoming reveal will be "unforgettable — whether it’s good or bad." During their online exchange, Musk also criticized Altman for what he termed "stealing a non-profit," referencing OpenAI's shift from a non-profit model to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). While OpenAI claims that its non-profit arm still governs critical aspects of the new structure, Musk and some detractors argue that this transformation undermines the organization’s original mission. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has filed multiple lawsuits against the organization, alleging that it has moved away from its founding goal of developing AI for the benefit of humanity, instead becoming a "closed-source, maximum-profit company" that favors Microsoft’s interests. Recently, Musk’s AI venture, xAI, accused OpenAI of attempting to misappropriate trade secrets by luring away its key staff. OpenAI has firmly denied these accusations and countersued Musk, accusing him of engaging in "bad-faith tactics" and "unlawful harassment" aimed at damaging its reputation.
