In late 2022, Noah Pepper, a former executive at Stripe responsible for business operations in the Asia Pacific, established Multiplier with the intention of developing software for tax accountants. However, the launch of ChatGPT sparked a realization for him: AI has the potential to transform the technology landscape for professional service firms. "I understood I was pursuing the wrong direction by aiming to create a SaaS business; the real opportunity lay in enhancing the efficiency of these firms," Pepper shared with TechCrunch. Following this insight, Multiplier secured Citrine International Tax, a specialized firm focused on cross-border tax accounting. By integrating its AI technology into Citrine’s operations, Multiplier's approach quickly proved effective—dramatically boosting Citrine's profit margins by eliminating manual tasks. This success led Pepper to pivot the company's strategy towards acquiring existing professional service firms and enhancing them with Multiplier's AI solutions. Today, rebranded as Multiplier Holdings, the company proudly announces it has raised $27.5 million through seed and Series A funding rounds. The Series A round was led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, while the earlier seed funding was spearheaded by Ribbit Capital, with contributions from SV Angel. This trend of startups acquiring established service businesses and scaling them through AI is gaining momentum, with notable venture capital firms such as General Catalyst and Khosla Ventures investing in similar ventures. "AI has made these transformations possible," remarked Justin Overdorff, a partner at Lightspeed. Alongside Multiplier, Lightspeed has also backed three other AI-driven roll-up companies that are yet to be disclosed. Overdorff emphasized that this strategy tends to work best with smaller firms that are more amenable to process changes, unlike larger accounting firms with extensive established practices. Before being acquired by Multiplier, Citrine operated as a modest two-person tax entity. Under Multiplier’s guidance, not only did Citrine enhance its profit margins, but it also expanded its operations significantly, according to Overdorff. Multiplier aims to broaden its services beyond personal tax compliance, aspiring to become a formidable competitor to the prominent Big Four accounting firms. Pepper expressed that Multiplier is on the lookout for high-revenue service firms led by visionary leaders eager to adopt and customize AI to elevate their businesses. "It resembles a venture-style approach, where we aim to invest in outstanding leaders within their fields," he stated.
