As India embarks on a quest to establish a formidable presence in the global artificial intelligence landscape, Mukesh Ambani is steering Reliance Industries to the forefront as a national leader. During the recent annual shareholder meeting, held in Mumbai, the conglomerate unveiled a range of AI-driven services, including the Jio Call Agent, an innovative assistant designed to enhance phone calls by transcribing conversations, generating summaries, and facilitating tasks such as ordering food or booking rides. This service, which can be activated with the phrase "Hey Jio," is set to roll out later this year to Jio's extensive user base of over 500 million. By integrating this AI assistant directly into its telecom infrastructure rather than offering it as a separate app, Reliance aims to transform AI assistance into an intrinsic part of everyday phone interactions. This strategy positions Jio to diminish reliance on third-party applications, giving the company a significant edge in a competitive AI market. In addition to the Jio Call Agent, Reliance also introduced an AI-enhanced version of its MyJio app, which allows users to perform various functions, such as activating eSIMs and choosing roaming plans, using natural language commands. Furthermore, the company unveiled TeleFrame, a smart home display that utilizes AI to proactively deliver information and reminders, mirroring trends toward ambient AI solutions seen at tech giants like Amazon and Google. These developments signal a new chapter in Reliance's aspirations in AI, particularly as India seeks to cultivate its own technological capabilities in a field predominantly led by U.S. and Chinese firms. Ambani emphasized the importance of India not just consuming foreign AI technology but becoming a creator and leader in this domain. Last year, Reliance launched Reliance Intelligence, which aims to build AI infrastructure and services tailored for consumers, businesses, and government applications, including support for 22 Indian languages. Reliance is aggressively pursuing its AI goals through collaborations with major tech players such as Google, Meta, and Nvidia, and has announced plans to invest $110 billion in AI infrastructure to dominate India's burgeoning AI landscape. During the shareholder meeting, the company also introduced a suite of AI services targeting healthcare, education, agriculture, and small businesses, designed to cater to local needs and operate in multiple languages. Moreover, Ambani disclosed that Jio Platforms’ board has approved a draft prospectus for an initial public offering, which includes a new issuance of up to 270 million shares, generating excitement among investors anticipating Jio's market debut. However, as Reliance expands its AI services, concerns arise regarding user data management, as the company has stated it will operate with user consent but has not clarified how data generated will be utilized, particularly in training AI models. The push for AI capabilities comes at a time when Indian firms heavily depend on foreign AI solutions and cloud services. Recent limitations on access to some of Anthropic’s advanced models highlight this vulnerability, emphasizing the necessity for Indian conglomerates to develop their own technological stack. Last week, Reliance announced a partnership with Meta to create an AI data center in Gujarat, continuing the momentum from Meta’s investment in Jio Platforms and their joint venture aimed at developing AI solutions for enterprise clients in India and beyond. Other major players in the Indian market, such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and the Adani Group, are also ramping up their AI initiatives, vying for a significant role in shaping India's AI future. For Reliance, this initiative is crucial, especially with its shares having fallen about 17% this year, making the need for new avenues of growth more pressing than ever.
