Mukesh Ambani puts AI at heart of Reliance’s next growth phase, calls for national self-sufficiency

At the recent 49th annual general meeting of Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman and Managing Director, emphasized the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in the company's next growth trajectory. He urged that India should evolve from merely consuming foreign technologies to developing its own capabilities. Ambani articulated that achieving self-sufficiency in AI should be a national priority, paralleling the country's goals in energy security and the acquisition of essential technologies and minerals. "In previous discussions, I have highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. It's imperative that India not only consumes AI created abroad but also emerges as a creator and global leader in this field," he stated. As Reliance gears up to launch Reliance Intelligence, its AI-focused initiative introduced last year, Ambani revealed that the company is entering a crucial execution phase. He described the vision for Reliance Intelligence as one that aims to deliver "AI to everyone, everywhere." This venture is poised to expand the conglomerate's digital footprint beyond Jio's telecom and consumer internet ventures, focusing on creating an extensive AI infrastructure, platforms, and services. Shifting Reliance's technology strategy, Ambani noted that the focus is transitioning from simply adopting existing solutions to cultivating original intellectual property in-house. "Today, Jio is not just integrating technology; we are innovating and creating original technology," he remarked. Ambani called upon engineers to address significant national challenges, assuring them that Reliance Intelligence would equip them with the necessary tools and resources to forge large-scale technological solutions. "We will provide the scale, resources, and freedom needed to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time," he pledged. Highlighting the broader implications of Reliance's AI initiative, Ambani connected it to India's urgent need for economic and technological independence amid global uncertainties. He stressed that geopolitical instabilities have heightened the necessity for India to minimize reliance on foreign nations in critical sectors. "Energy self-sufficiency and AI self-sufficiency should be recognized as national missions," he concluded. The emphasis on Reliance Intelligence indicates that AI is set to play a crucial role in the group’s digital expansion, complementing its existing connectivity, cloud, and technology services.
