YouTube sensation MrBeast, known for his extravagant content, has made headlines once again with the announcement that his company, Beast Industries, is acquiring Step, a financial app tailored for teenagers. Step has made significant waves in the fintech sector, amassing over 7 million users and securing half a billion dollars in funding. The app aims to provide Gen Z with essential financial services, promoting skills like credit building, savings, and investment. The popularity of Step has drawn notable investors, including celebrities such as Charli D’Amelio, Will Smith, The Chainsmokers, and Stephen Curry, alongside venture capitalists like General Catalyst, Coatue, and the payments innovator Stripe. Partnering with MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, could prove advantageous for Step as it continues to capture the attention of a younger audience. With over 466 million subscribers, MrBeast is the most-followed creator on YouTube, and he has ambitions that extend well beyond his viral videos. Reflecting on his own financial education, the 27-year-old entrepreneur expressed, "Nobody taught me about investing, building credit, or managing money when I was growing up. I want to give millions of young people the financial foundation I never had." He further emphasized his excitement in announcing the acquisition, stating that the collaboration with Step aligns with his mission to empower youth financially. This acquisition aligns with earlier indications that Beast Industries had interests in the fintech sector, as suggested by a leaked pitch document from the previous year. Additionally, the company is reportedly exploring the launch of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), reminiscent of Ryan Reynolds’ Mint Mobile, indicating a broader strategy beyond traditional YouTube revenue. While MrBeast’s channel generates substantial income, much of it is reinvested into content creation. Notably, the company’s chocolate brand Feastables has emerged as a lucrative venture, reportedly outpacing both the MrBeast YouTube channel and the Prime Video series “Beast Games” in profitability, according to industry reports. Other projects, such as Lunchly and MrBeast Burger, have faced challenges. Step's founder and CEO, CJ MacDonald, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We’re excited about how this acquisition is going to amplify our platform and bring more groundbreaking products to Step customers."
