In the latest edition of the Rocket Report, excitement continues to build following NASA's historic Artemis II mission, marking humanity's return to the Moon after more than five decades. As the agency shifts focus to finalizing a lunar lander, attention also turns to the advancements being made by SpaceX and Blue Origin, both of whom are working on essential components for lunar exploration. In a significant development, Israel's Moonshot Space has announced plans to establish its first electromagnetic accelerator in Fairbanks, Alaska. This initiative comes after a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Alaska Aerospace Corporation (AAC) during the Space Symposium. Moonshot, which revealed its operations in December with a funding boost of $12 million, aims to utilize a high-power electromagnetic launcher to send payloads into space at hypersonic speeds, utilizing electricity as opposed to traditional chemical fuels. AAC's CEO, John Oberst, commented on the agreement, highlighting their commitment to fostering innovation in the region. "We are working to align infrastructure, partnerships, and regulatory pathways to support next-generation space access with visionary companies like Moonshot Space," he stated. Shahar Bahiri, the COO and co-founder of Moonshot, acknowledged the boldness of their vision and expressed gratitude for AAC's support. However, the approach comes with challenges; while the technology promises to revolutionize launches, the intense accelerations involved could pose risks to conventional satellites. Instead, Moonshot envisions launching raw materials into orbit for in-space manufacturing, potentially transforming how we approach space logistics.
