China’s Moonshot AI raises $2B at $20B valuation as demand for open-source AI skyrockets

In a remarkable development within the artificial intelligence sector, Beijing-based Moonshot AI has successfully raised approximately $2 billion, achieving a staggering valuation of $20 billion. This funding round highlights the growing interest in open-source AI models, especially from Chinese companies, despite the competitive cash landscape compared to their Western counterparts. Led by Meituan's venture capital arm, Long-Z Investment, the funding attracted significant participation from notable investors including Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng, as reported by Huafeng Capital. In the past six months alone, Moonshot AI has raised a total of $3.9 billion, demonstrating a robust investor confidence in its potential. Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former researcher at Meta AI and Google Brain, Moonshot AI has quickly risen to prominence in the AI community. Its Kimi series of large language models, particularly the Kimi K2.5, has garnered attention for its impressive performance metrics, nearly rivaling those of established models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The latest iteration, Kimi K2.6, currently ranks as the second-most popular large language model on the OpenRouter distribution platform. Investor enthusiasm for open-weight AI models from Chinese developers is on the rise, with Moonshot's annual recurring revenue surpassing $200 million as of April, largely fueled by a spike in paid subscriptions and API usage. Meanwhile, rival DeepSeek is reportedly exploring its first external funding round at an eye-watering valuation of around $45 billion. The market dynamics are shifting, as some of Moonshot’s competitors, including Zhipu AI and MiniMax, have successfully gone public, benefiting from increased demand for their AI offerings. As the landscape evolves, Moonshot's Kimi models continue to challenge other major players like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and various offerings from ByteDance and Alibaba. Notable backers of Moonshot AI include industry giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and IDG Capital.
