Momentic raises $15M to automate software testing

In the realm of software development, while product demonstrations often steal the spotlight, the behind-the-scenes tasks of debugging, quality assurance, and testing play a pivotal role in ensuring seamless performance. As developers increasingly turn to automation for efficiency, AI is stepping in to transform these essential processes. On Monday, Momentic, an innovative AI testing startup, announced a successful $15 million in Series A funding, spearheaded by Standard Capital and supported by Dropbox Ventures. The round also saw participation from existing backers including Y Combinator, FCVC, Transpose Platform, and Karman Ventures. This new influx of capital builds upon a previous $3.7 million seed round disclosed earlier in March. Momentic specializes in creating tools aimed at software testing and verification, a sector currently dominated by established open-source frameworks like Playwright and Selenium. These frameworks offer intricate controls, but Momentic aims to simplify the process using AI. Co-founder Wei-Wei Wu explained, "We assist our clients in ensuring their products function as intended. They can articulate their essential user flows in straightforward language, and our AI takes care of the automation." Both Wu and co-founder Jeff An bring substantial experience from developer tooling roles at reputable companies such as Qualtrics and WeWork, with Wu notably contributing to the open-source Node.js project. Throughout his career, Wu has identified code verification as a persistent challenge across teams. He shared with TechCrunch, "Testing has been the most significant pain point for every team I've collaborated with." Momentic's AI-powered strategy has already attracted a diverse clientele, amassing 2,600 users, including notable names like Notion, Xero, Bilt, Webflow, and Retool. While Wu remained discreet about revenue and profitability metrics, he emphasized that the product's growth trajectory has been compelling enough to draw investor interest. The ability to automate testing not only simplifies processes but also significantly enhances scalability, enabling a volume of tests that was previously unfeasible. Wu revealed that in the past month alone, Momentic automated over 200 million test steps. However, the competitive landscape is evolving, with major players like OpenAI and Anthropic also venturing into agentic testing through their advanced models. As these models become more refined, the market potential for enterprise SaaS firms like Momentic could encounter challenges. For the time being, Wu is intent on advancing his product with the new funding. Following a recent launch of mobile environment support in August, he aims to enhance test-case management as the team expands. Wu believes that the surge in automated coding will lead to a proliferation of new applications, consequently increasing the demand for reliable testing solutions. "Every new app requires testing," he stated. "Quality is a priority, and we're here to deliver it."
