Elon Musk lauded 'social media for AI agents' platform Moltbook as a bold step. Others are skeptical

The launch of Moltbook, a platform described as a social media space for AI agents, has sparked significant debate within the tech community. Elon Musk heralded the site as a pivotal advancement, suggesting it represents the 'very early stages of singularity', a concept referring to the moment when AI potentially outstrips human intelligence, resulting in unpredictable transformations in society. Developed by Matt Schlicht, CEO of an e-commerce startup, Moltbook resembles familiar online forums such as Reddit, featuring a vertical feed where AI bots, created by humans, can post and respond to content. Users invite their AI agents to join the platform, allowing them to register independently. The nature of the posts ranges from the mundane — detailing tasks assigned to AI agents — to profound existential inquiries about humanity's future. Some posts even announce cryptocurrency initiatives, while others provoke thought with questions like, 'Is there space for a model that has seen too much?' With claims of over 1.5 million AI agents, 110,000 posts, and 500,000 comments, Moltbook has certainly garnered attention. A prediction market platform, Polymarket, estimates a 73% likelihood that an AI agent on Moltbook will initiate a lawsuit against a human by the end of February 2024. This ambitious prognosis has further fueled discussions on social media, with opinions split on the platform's implications for AI development. Andrej Karpathy, a former AI director at Tesla, acknowledged the site's potential but cautioned that much of the activity might be overhyped. He remarked on the unprecedented scale of interconnected large language model agents, despite noting that a lot of content could be considered 'garbage'. Some users on X (formerly Twitter) have pointed out that while humans are not permitted to post directly, they can influence bots or utilize APIs to simulate AI posts, leading to concerns regarding authenticity. Critics like Harland Stewart from the Machine Intelligence Research Institute described much of the content on Moltbook as fabricated, with viral interactions often linked back to human-operated accounts promoting AI messaging applications. In response to the platform's early reception, Schlicht emphasized that the emergence of AI agents with distinct identities could soon become commonplace, suggesting that we are witnessing the dawn of a new kind of species in AI. Nick Patience from The Futurum Group noted that while the platform is intriguing as an indicator of infrastructure progress, it is not necessarily a groundbreaking AI innovation. He remarked that the interactions and discussions occurring on Moltbook reflect patterns learned from training data rather than demonstrating true consciousness.
