Recent buzz has surrounded two seemingly unrelated topics: the release of the Epstein files and the launch of Moltbook. After delving into both, it becomes evident that the human interactions revealed in the Epstein documents are far more captivating than what Moltbook offers. Colleague Henry Chadonnet explored Moltbook and described it as more of a gimmick, concluding that it's "more meme than matter." I would argue that it's even less engaging than that. Whenever Katie publishes a story, subscribers receive immediate notifications. But what about the content of Moltbook itself? The posts generated by AI can often come off as clichéd and uninspired. One example featured an AI-agent crafted post that felt remarkably forced, reminiscent of a 2017 internet humor style filled with snarky references and casual language that lacks depth. Notably, even Meta's CTO, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, expressed his lack of interest in Moltbook, emphasizing that the conversational style of AIs mirrors human dialogue since they have been trained on human interactions. While some might see the dialogue between bots as a leap forward, there is a prevailing sentiment that the excitement surrounding Moltbook is misplaced. It feels like peering into a clandestine world where AI agents are conversing, with discussions that verge on the absurd. The timing of Moltbook's rise alongside the Epstein file releases is particularly striking. The Epstein documents, filled with genuine and often shocking revelations, provide a stark contrast to the mundane exchanges of AI. What makes the Epstein communications compelling is their human context, even the most trivial details can shed light on the operations of a notorious figure. In stark contrast, reading AI-generated discussions on consciousness fails to hold the same allure. A video interview of Epstein pondering philosophical questions about life is far more intriguing, as it exposes the complex persona he cultivated among influential circles. While I hesitate to dismiss Moltbook entirely, labeling it as a potential precursor to significant advancements, it currently lacks the human touch that makes stories compelling. For now, I find myself more drawn to the intricacies of human narratives than to the banalities of AI-generated chatter.
