In a shocking incident on Friday, law enforcement arrested an individual accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's residence, the CEO of OpenAI. The attack reportedly took place around 4 a.m., igniting a fire on an exterior gate of Altman's home in North Beach, San Francisco. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. An OpenAI representative confirmed the assault in a statement, expressing gratitude for the absence of harm. Following the initial attack, police responded to a subsequent report of a man threatening to set fire to the OpenAI headquarters. Officers identified the suspect as the same individual involved in the earlier incident at Altman's home, leading to his arrest about an hour later. The 20-year-old suspect remains in custody as charges are anticipated. OpenAI acknowledged the swift response of the San Francisco Police Department and emphasized their ongoing cooperation with law enforcement in the investigation. This incident unfolds during a particularly tumultuous period for Altman and OpenAI. Earlier in the year, the company faced backlash for its agreement with the Department of Defense, which came after the Pentagon cut ties with AI competitor Anthropic. Activists had protested outside both companies' offices, urging OpenAI employees to voice their concerns regarding the deal. As OpenAI and Anthropic vie for dominance in the lucrative large language model market, both companies are valued collectively at over $1 trillion and are exploring potential IPOs despite incurring substantial cash losses. Additionally, a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI and Altman is set to go to trial soon, alleging that Altman manipulated Musk into contributing $38 million under the pretense that the organization would remain a nonprofit. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, is seeking to have Altman removed from his role as CEO as part of the legal proceedings.
