India’s MoEngage bets that the future of marketing is millions of AI agents

MoEngage, an Indian software firm specializing in customer engagement, has made a significant move by acquiring the San Francisco-based startup Aampe in an all-cash transaction. Though the exact financial details remain undisclosed, sources indicate that the purchase is valued in the tens of millions of dollars. Founded in 2020, Aampe has developed innovative software that assigns a unique AI agent to each customer, enabling brands to tailor their messaging based on individual behaviors rather than relying solely on traditional audience segments and campaign strategies. With a growing clientele of over 30 brands across the U.S., Europe, and Asia-Pacific, Aampe has demonstrated impressive growth, achieving a 150% increase in annual recurring revenue over the past year, as shared by MoEngage's co-founder and CEO Raviteja Dodda in a recent interview. Dodda expressed optimism that this acquisition will bolster MoEngage's ability to attract customers currently using competing marketing platforms like Salesforce and Adobe. "A significant portion of our growth comes from enterprises migrating from Salesforce Marketing Cloud and Adobe Experience Cloud," he noted, adding that MoEngage recently secured several multi-million-dollar contracts from these customers. The acquisition aligns with a broader trend in the software industry, where companies are increasingly integrating AI into enterprise applications. This shift goes beyond merely generating content or supporting employees, moving towards autonomous agents capable of making key marketing decisions—such as identifying target customers and optimizing message delivery times. Aampe’s technology is already utilized by notable brands such as Swiggy, Grab, and Taxfix, many of which also leverage MoEngage’s customer engagement solutions. This strategic acquisition follows MoEngage's successful fundraising of $280 million earlier this year through various transactions. Following the acquisition, around 20 Aampe employees will join MoEngage, expanding its workforce to approximately 820. Aampe itself has raised around $28 million across three funding rounds, with notable investors including Peak XV Partners, Z47, and Theory Ventures.
