FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna’s mRNA after agency drama

In a significant development, independent advisors for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cast a unanimous vote of 9–0 in favor of Moderna's mRNA flu vaccine, known as mRNA-1010 and marketed as mFlusiva. This decision comes after a turbulent period where a Trump-era appointee attempted to block the vaccine from undergoing review. During an extensive meeting, members of the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) meticulously analyzed the data and presentations regarding the new vaccine. Among the information presented was a comprehensive review by FDA scientists, which endorsed the vaccine's efficacy. Notably, a Phase 3 trial involving over 40,000 participants aged 50 and older indicated that this mRNA vaccine demonstrated approximately 27 percent greater effectiveness against seasonal flu compared to traditional flu shots. Additionally, a smaller Phase 3 trial that included nearly 3,000 individuals aged 65 and above revealed that the vaccine elicits stronger immune responses than the high-dose flu vaccine typically recommended for older adults. The overall safety profile of the mRNA-1010 was also found to be reassuring. Flor Munoz-Rivas, a pediatric infectious disease expert at Baylor College of Medicine and a voting member of VRBPAC, remarked on the quality of the studies presented, highlighting their robust results in showcasing enhanced efficacy. She expressed excitement about the mRNA platform employed in this flu vaccine, which mirrors the technology Moderna utilized for its COVID-19 vaccines. Munoz-Rivas noted that this innovative approach not only improves efficacy but also facilitates the swift development of vaccines to address regular seasonal flu and prepares us for potential emerging or pandemic strains in the future.
