French artificial intelligence startup Mistral has introduced its latest product, Mistral Code, a cutting-edge 'vibe coding' client set to rival established players like Windsurf, Anysphere’s Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. This advanced AI-driven coding assistant is derived from the open-source initiative Continue and combines Mistral’s proprietary models with features such as an in-IDE assistant, local deployment capabilities, and enterprise-grade tools, all packaged into a user-friendly platform. A private beta version is now accessible for JetBrains development environments and Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code. In a recent blog post, Mistral articulated its vision for Mistral Code, stating, "Our goal is straightforward: to provide top-tier coding models for enterprise developers, facilitating everything from instant code completions to complex multi-step refactoring through a cohesive platform that can be deployed in the cloud, on dedicated servers, or securely on-premises with air-gapped GPUs." The demand for AI programming assistants continues to surge as they promise to enhance coding efficiency, although they still face challenges in producing high-quality software. A recent survey indicated that 76% of developers either currently utilize or plan to incorporate AI tools into their development workflows. Mistral Code is powered by a suite of proprietary models, including Codestral for code autocompletion, Codestral Embed for code searching and retrieval, Devstral for complex coding tasks, and Mistral Medium for conversational support. This versatile client supports over 80 programming languages and integrates numerous third-party plugins, offering the ability to analyze files, terminal outputs, and various issues, according to Mistral. The company reports that several clients, including consulting giant Capgemini, the Spanish and Portuguese bank Abanca, and France’s national railway operator SNCF, are already leveraging Mistral Code in their operations. Mistral elaborated, "Customers can fine-tune or post-train the fundamental models using their private repositories and create more lightweight versions as needed." For IT administrators, a comprehensive admin console is available, providing advanced platform controls, detailed observability, seat management, and usage analytics. Looking ahead, Mistral plans to continually enhance Mistral Code and contribute some of these advancements back to the Continue open-source project. Established in 2023, Mistral aims to develop a diverse array of AI services, including a chatbot platform named Le Chat and various mobile applications. The startup has garnered support from venture capital firms such as General Catalyst, securing over €1.1 billion (approximately $1.24 billion) in funding. Recently, Mistral also launched its Codestral, Devstral, and Mistral Medium models, alongside the enterprise-focused Le Chat, which features tools like an AI agent builder and integration with third-party platforms like Gmail, Google Drive, and SharePoint.
