Europe's answer to OpenAI announces billion-dollar AI infrastructure push in Sweden

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral has announced a significant investment of 1.2 billion euros (approximately $1.43 billion) aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure in Sweden, particularly through the establishment of AI data centers. This move is part of Europe's broader strategy to bolster its technological independence and capabilities in the face of escalating geopolitical challenges. The funding will primarily focus on developing AI data centers, increasing computing power, and advancing localized AI technologies, as stated by Mistral. Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly risen to prominence in the European AI landscape, having successfully raised 1.7 billion euros in funding just last month, resulting in a valuation of 11.7 billion euros. Notably, Dutch chip manufacturer ASML was a major contributor to this funding round, providing 1.3 billion euros, while tech giants such as Nvidia and Microsoft, along with several investment firms, also back the company. Arthur Mensch, the CEO of Mistral, emphasized the importance of this investment, describing it as a pivotal step towards establishing autonomous AI capabilities within Europe. He stated, "By delivering a fully vertical offer with locally processed and stored data, we are reinforcing Europe's strategic autonomy and competitiveness." This initiative aims to lay the groundwork for a European AI cloud capable of serving various sectors, including industry, public services, and research at scale. Initially, Mistral concentrated on developing large language models (LLMs), but it has since diversified its focus to include the necessary infrastructure for AI operations. Earlier this year, the company launched Mistral Compute, a comprehensive platform that integrates various components such as graphics processing units (GPUs), application programming interfaces (APIs), and fully managed platform-as-a-service offerings. The Nordic region is regarded as an optimal location for data centers in Europe, thanks to its cooler climate and competitive energy costs. Recently, OpenAI also announced plans to establish an AI data center in Norway as part of its "Stargate" project. As part of this new investment, Mistral will collaborate with Swedish firm EcoDataCenter to implement extensive AI computing capabilities, marking the startup's first foray into infrastructure investment outside of France. The new facility is projected to open in 2027 and will facilitate the development and operational support for Mistral's advanced AI models. While Mistral currently leads in funding among European LLM developers, it still trails behind its U.S. counterparts, which have access to significantly larger private funding rounds, including OpenAI's potential $100 billion funding and Anthropic's recent $10 billion agreement.
