Mistral secures $830 million in debt financing to fund AI data center

French AI startup Mistral announced on Monday that it has successfully raised $830 million in debt financing aimed at establishing a new data center equipped with thousands of Nvidia chips. Founded in 2023, Mistral is positioning itself as a key player in the European AI landscape, striving to develop foundational AI models that can rival those of industry giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, despite having a considerably smaller financial base. The company is focused on enhancing the infrastructure necessary for AI development. Earlier this year, Mistral unveiled an ambitious plan to invest 1.2 billion euros in building data centers and computational capacity in Sweden. Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral, emphasized the importance of scaling their infrastructure across Europe. He stated, "Scaling our infrastructure in Europe is critical to empower our customers and to ensure AI innovation and autonomy remain at the heart of Europe." Mistral aims to meet the increasing demand from governments, enterprises, and research institutions that prefer to create their own tailored AI environments instead of relying on third-party cloud services. The financing deal was facilitated by a consortium of seven prominent global banks, including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, and Natixis CIB.
