Mistral, the French AI laboratory, has unveiled a host of exciting new features for its Le Chat chatbot, aiming to elevate its performance to rival industry leaders such as OpenAI and Google. This significant update, announced on Thursday, introduces a "deep research" mode, enhanced multilingual reasoning, and sophisticated image editing capabilities. The timing of this announcement coincides with the recent launch of Voxtral, Mistral's inaugural open-source AI audio model, which boasts multilingual reasoning and transcription abilities. Voxtral can also be accessed through Le Chat, further enhancing its utility. Mistral's deep research mode transforms Le Chat into a comprehensive research assistant, enabling it to plan, clarify user needs, search for information, and synthesize data effectively. Elisa Salamanca, head of product at Mistral, explained that the model scours a diverse array of online sources to provide precise answers to specific inquiries. "This feature will be invaluable for both consumers and enterprises," she stated, highlighting its potential to assist users in planning travel and conducting extensive research for business purposes. The updates are implemented across all subscription tiers—Free, Pro, Team, and Enterprise. However, Mistral is particularly focused on seamlessly integrating Le Chat with its suite of productivity tools tailored for enterprise environments. Salamanca noted that many clients, especially in sectors like banking, defense, and government, manage sensitive data on-premises, often utilizing virtual private clouds instead of traditional cloud services. To cater to these needs, Le Chat’s deep research capabilities allow companies to analyze their internal data without needing to upload it to the cloud. This feature sets Mistral apart from cloud-based competitors such as OpenAI, which operates on Azure, and Gemini, which relies on Google Cloud. Looking ahead, Mistral plans to expand its productivity offerings, aiming for Le Chat Enterprise to enhance tools like Microsoft Excel and Google Docs. This vision is already in motion with the development of internal connectors designed to facilitate seamless integration with office suites. Beyond the deep research capabilities, Le Chat now supports multilingual reasoning in languages, including French, Spanish, and Japanese, allowing for code-switching within conversations. Additionally, the introduction of the Projects feature enables users to organize chats, documents, and ideas into distinct, focused spaces, enhancing overall productivity. Finally, the update enhances Le Chat's image editing capabilities, empowering users to create and modify images using prompts like "remove the object" or "place me in another city." These advancements position Mistral as a formidable competitor in the AI landscape, shifting Le Chat from merely a demonstration model to a robust player in the market.
