Mistral AI buys Koyeb in first acquisition to back its cloud ambitions

Mistral AI, a French company valued at $13.8 billion, has taken a significant step by acquiring Koyeb, a startup based in Paris that specializes in simplifying the deployment of AI applications at scale. This move marks Mistral's first acquisition and underscores its ambition to solidify its position as a comprehensive player in the AI landscape. While Mistral is recognized for its development of large language models (LLMs), this acquisition aligns with its recent launch of Mistral Compute, an AI cloud infrastructure initiative. By integrating Koyeb's capabilities, Mistral aims to expedite the growth of its cloud offerings. Founded in 2020 by three former Scaleway employees, Koyeb has focused on enabling developers to handle data processing without the complexities of server management, a methodology known as serverless. As AI demands have surged, Koyeb introduced Sandboxes, which offer isolated environments for deploying AI agents. Prior to the acquisition, Koyeb's platform had already facilitated the deployment of models from Mistral and other sources. Post-acquisition, Koyeb stated that its platform will continue to function independently, while its team and technology will enhance Mistral’s ability to deploy models directly on client hardware, optimize GPU usage, and scale AI inference. Koyeb’s 13 employees, including co-founders Yann Léger, Edouard Bonlieu, and Bastien Chatelard, will join Mistral's engineering team under the guidance of CTO Timothée Lacroix. Lacroix emphasized that Koyeb's technology will evolve into a vital component of Mistral Compute in the near future. Mistral's push into the cloud sector has been evident, highlighted by its recent announcement of a $1.4 billion investment in Swedish data centers to meet the increasing demand for alternatives to U.S. infrastructure. Koyeb, which has raised $8.6 million to date, including a recent $7 million seed round, is expected to pivot towards enterprise clients exclusively, ceasing new sign-ups for its Starter tier. Although the financial specifics of the acquisition remain undisclosed, Mistral's CEO Arthur Mensch hinted at ongoing hiring efforts for infrastructure roles, promoting the company as a European-based entity engaged in cutting-edge research.
