The landscape of AI video creation is changing, and at the forefront is Mirelo, a Berlin-based startup that has just raised $41 million in a seed funding round led by Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. While many AI tools enable users to create videos, they often fall short when it comes to integrating audio. Mirelo aims to solve this issue by developing AI technology that adds soundtracks that align perfectly with the video’s action. Earlier this year, the startup unveiled Mirelo SFX v1.5, an innovative AI model designed to analyze videos and seamlessly integrate synchronized sound effects. This breakthrough has caught the attention of venture capitalists who are gearing up for a generative AI boom, particularly in the gaming sector. With just two years under its belt, Mirelo is now better positioned to compete in this burgeoning field. Despite being in stealth mode and facing resource constraints, the startup is not alone in this space. Major companies like Sony, Tencent, and Kuaishou-owned Kling AI have also released models that convert video to sound effects. Mirelo, however, differentiates itself with its specific focus on sound, but to stay ahead in the long run, it plans to expand its team significantly. CJ Simon-Gabriel, CEO and co-founder of Mirelo, expressed ambitions to double or even triple their current team of 10 by the end of next year. This expansion will bolster their research and development, as well as their product and marketing strategies. Mirelo has made its models available on platforms like Fal.ai and Replicate, with expectations that API usage will contribute significantly to revenue in the near future. Furthermore, the startup is dedicated to creating Mirelo Studio, a workspace designed for content creators, which could eventually cater to professional needs. As Mirelo prepares for its growth, it is also addressing potential concerns regarding the training data used in its models. Georgia Stevenson from Index Ventures confirmed that Mirelo has based its sound models on publicly available and purchased sound libraries, while also forming revenue-sharing partnerships that honor artists’ rights. This aspect is crucial in the generative AI realm, yet Mirelo positions itself as a tool for creators rather than a replacement for musicians and sound designers. The company offers a freemium model, with a recommended plan for creators priced at €20/month (around $23.50), targeting both amateurs and prosumers who want to enhance their AI-generated videos with audio. Simon-Gabriel emphasizes the importance of sound in the video experience, quoting George Lucas: “Sound is 50% of the movie-going experience.” He believes that sound has the power to transform the atmosphere of a video, making it essential for creators to incorporate audio. Both Simon-Gabriel and co-founder Florian Wenzel, who are AI researchers and musicians, have plans for future developments in AI music generation. However, they are currently witnessing a higher demand for sound effects, which presents a unique opportunity for Mirelo to establish a strong market position. While Simon-Gabriel refrained from sharing specific valuation figures, he indicated that the startup's worth has grown significantly since its earlier pre-seed round, which was also backed by Atlantic, raising its total funding to $44 million. The startup has garnered support from influential angel investors, enhancing its credibility in the tech space. The competition is heating up as other platforms, such as Gemini’s video generator, are beginning to incorporate soundtracks as well. Simon-Gabriel feels validated by this trend, noting, “Now, suddenly, people realize, ‘Oh, maybe we should add sound.’ It’s reminiscent of the transition from silent films to talkies, where the inclusion of sound dramatically changed the experience.”
