Warner Bros. has finally unveiled the much-anticipated extended teaser for the upcoming film Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and featuring Milly Alcock in the leading role. The journey to this film began as far back as 2018, but initial plans were derailed due to the merger that resulted in the creation of Warner Bros. Discovery. With the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios, a fresh vision for the DC universe has emerged, starting with this summer’s Superman. Although Sasha Calle briefly portrayed Supergirl in 2023’s The Flash, the new leadership chose to take a different approach for the standalone film. Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, was cast to redefine the character. Gunn has emphasized a desire to distinguish this version of Supergirl from previous adaptations, particularly the portrayal by Melissa Benoist in the Arrowverse series that aired from 2015 to 2021. He aims for a character that diverges from the traditional earnestness, presenting a more complex contrast to David Corenswet’s Superman. “This is a story-based medium; we want stories to be in theaters that are cool and different from each other,” Gunn stated at a recent media briefing. He added, “This movie is not just a female clone of Superman. It’s its own thing entirely, featuring a character who truly deserves this unique treatment.”
