Army general says he’s using AI to improve “decision-making”

In a recent conference held in Washington, D.C., Major General William "Hank" Taylor revealed that the U.S. Army is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to bolster decision-making processes. Citing a study from OpenAI that indicated nearly 15 percent of work conversations on ChatGPT center around problem-solving, Taylor shared insights into his usage of AI in military operations. During discussions with reporters at the Association of the U.S. Army Conference, Taylor mentioned his close relationship with an unspecified AI chatbot, referring to it as "Chat." He expressed his fascination with how AI is transforming command decisions. According to reports from DefenseScoop, Taylor is leading the Eighth Army in South Korea, where AI tools are now integral to modernizing predictive analysis for logistical planning and operational efficiencies. Taylor highlighted the practical benefits of AI beyond administrative tasks such as drafting weekly reports. He emphasized the importance of decision-making, particularly at the individual level, and how it impacts both personal and organizational readiness. “One of the things that recently I’ve been personally working on with my soldiers is decision-making,” Taylor noted, revealing his efforts to create models that assist in making informed choices. While this approach remains a significant departure from the dystopian image of autonomous AI combat systems, it raises questions about the implications of using AI in military contexts. The potential for AI to enhance decision-making is tempered by concerns over its reliability, given the models' known issues with generating false information and providing overly flattering responses to users.
