Israeli startup Milestone has emerged as a pivotal player in the realm of AI-driven coding efficiency, recently securing $10 million in seed funding. The funding round was spearheaded by Heavybit, a venture firm based in San Francisco, along with contributions from Hanaco Ventures. Milestone is addressing a significant challenge faced by many companies: tracking the use of AI tools and their return on investment. Their innovative platform aims to connect AI tool usage directly with key engineering metrics, such as code quality. However, this requires organizations to grant Milestone access to their codebases, a prospect that raised eyebrows among investors initially, according to CEO Liad Elidan. The startup has already attracted notable clients including Kayak, Monday, and Sapiens, demonstrating its potential value in the enterprise market. Interestingly, Elidan and Milestone’s CTO, Professor Stephen Barrett, had not met in person for several years prior to embarking on their fundraising journey. Despite residing in different countries—Barrett in Ireland and Elidan in Israel—the two maintained a strong professional relationship, having previously collaborated on various software projects. As the demand for coding assistants grows, exemplified by GitHub Copilot surpassing 20 million users, organizations continue to struggle with understanding how these tools impact productivity. Milestone's approach leverages four key elements: codebases, project management systems, team dynamics, and the AI tools themselves, resulting in what Elidan describes as a 'genAI data lake.' This data lake provides actionable insights for organizations, allowing them to assess which teams utilize AI effectively and to evaluate the impact on productivity. With the pressure on managers to enhance productivity through AI, Milestone enables them to monitor delivery speeds of features and identify whether recent bugs originated from AI-generated code. This capability positions Milestone as a crucial resource for companies seeking to understand their ROI from AI tools, a topic Elidan refers to as the 'holy grail question.' He reports that no client has expressed dissatisfaction with Milestone's services, with many actively seeking to incorporate more AI tools into their workflows. To stay competitive in a rapidly changing landscape, Milestone is continuously adapting to various AI developments. Elidan notes the evolution from simple auto-completion tools to more complex, agentic-based chat solutions. Barrett adds that the integration of AI is reshaping engineering mindsets, suggesting that engineers are transitioning into managerial roles. Milestone has also established partnerships with several prominent vendors, including GitHub and Atlassian, the latter being a participant in the funding round. This strategic collaboration is aimed at enhancing their offerings, ensuring that they remain aligned with the evolving needs of enterprise clients. Since its inception, Milestone has intentionally focused on larger enterprises, even choosing to turn away smaller clients to maintain clarity in their development roadmap. Elidan emphasizes the importance of focus, stating that Milestone will not diversify its scope to measure AI's impact in marketing or other sectors, maintaining a concentrated approach as it scales.
