Welcome to the latest edition of the Rocket Report! As we dive into the current events of the space sector, it's essential to acknowledge a significant milestone in human space exploration. Fifty years ago, on July 15, 1975, NASA launched a three-person Apollo crew from Florida, while two Russian cosmonauts embarked on their journey from Kazakhstan. This historic event marked the first collaborative human spaceflight mission between the United States and Russia, setting the stage for a complex yet enduring partnership that continues aboard the International Space Station (ISS). However, with ISS operations slated to conclude in 2030, the future of U.S.-Russian collaboration in space remains uncertain after the station's decommissioning. In exciting developments within the European space sector, the European Space Agency (ESA) has identified five innovative launch startups eligible for funding up to 169 million euros (approximately $198 million). This funding aims to cultivate alternatives to Arianespace, the dominant launch service provider in Europe. The selected companies include Isar Aerospace, MaiaSpace, Rocket Factory Augsburg, PLD Space, and Orbex. Among these, only Isar Aerospace has made an attempt to reach orbit, experiencing a setback when its Spectrum rocket failed shortly after launch during a test flight in March. While these startups are now in line for potential support, it’s important to note that none are guaranteed contracts or funding from ESA. Over the coming months, ESA will engage in negotiations with European governments to secure the necessary funding ahead of its ministerial council meeting in November. This meeting will be crucial as ESA member states will finalize the agency's budget for the next two years, paving the way for binding agreements and future collaborations.
