A new report from Synergy, an IT market research firm, highlights that these regions collectively accounted for one-third of the hyperscale data center capacity by the end of 2025, a shift that signals a move away from the long-standing dominance of Northern Virginia. Forecasts suggest that Texas and the Midwest will contribute an impressive 53% of the new hyperscale data center capacity that is set to become operational in the near future. The report emphasizes that the availability of power is a key driver behind this inland shift, as companies constructing large-scale facilities seek out locations with reliable electricity sources. The rapid expansion of data centers across the nation is raising concerns about the strain on the aging power grid and the potential for increased electricity costs. In this competitive landscape, Texas is leading the charge for new data center developments, while the Midwest is quickly gaining traction. States like Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri are becoming essential players in this growth. Wisconsin, in particular, has drawn significant attention, attracting major projects from tech giants such as Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft. Meanwhile, Michigan is home to an Oracle-backed Stargate data center, and Northern Indiana is witnessing Amazon and Google establish extensive data center campuses. Ohio is already recognized as one of the largest data center markets in the country, benefiting from generous tax incentives, including property tax abatements that can last up to 30 years. A notable trend contributing to Texas's data center boom is the BYOP (bring your own power) approach. Many facilities, including the Stargate campus in Abilene, are opting to bypass the traditional power grid entirely by constructing their own on-site power plants, primarily using natural gas as a fuel source.
