In internal meeting, Microsoft execs share a plan to ward off AI coding rivals by overhauling GitHub

In a recent internal meeting, Microsoft executives disclosed plans to revamp GitHub in response to the increasing competition from AI coding tools. The discussion, which was reviewed by Business Insider, highlighted the company’s strategy to enhance its software development platform and maintain its edge in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. CEO Satya Nadella referenced frustrations expressed by co-founder Bill Gates about the fragmentation of software applications. Nadella emphasized the need to blur the lines between different types of applications, stating, "In the AI world, there is no difference between an app, a document, and a website." Since Microsoft’s acquisition of GitHub in 2018, the platform has enjoyed significant popularity, aided by its partnership with OpenAI. However, it is now facing stiff competition from emerging AI tools like Cursor and Claude Code. Recent survey results from Jellyfish indicated that GitHub Copilot, Microsoft’s AI coding assistant, while still a preferred choice, has seen a decline in market share against these rivals. During the meeting, a Microsoft engineer raised concerns about the rapid advancements of competitors, prompting executives to delve into strategies for reclaiming GitHub’s status as the central hub for AI-driven software development. Executive Jay Parikh remarked, "GitHub is just not the place anymore where developers are storing code. We aim to make it the center of gravity for all AI-powered software development." In a move to bolster GitHub’s capabilities, Microsoft is investing in enhancements across the platform. This includes improving GitHub Actions, which automates code building and deployment, as well as refining analytics and security features. Parikh noted that the development team is more productive than ever, rolling out updates on a daily basis. Additionally, Microsoft is expanding its vision for GitHub. The company plans to integrate its AI tools seamlessly across various environments—whether in command lines, web browsers, or within other Microsoft applications—allowing developers to manage multiple AI agents from a single dashboard. Parikh also echoed sentiments from Microsoft’s AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, about the importance of developing proprietary large language models rather than solely relying on partnerships. As the tech giant prepares for a significant upgrade to its flagship software, Visual Studio, it is clear that Microsoft is committed to responding to the challenges posed by newer AI coding solutions. With these strategic initiatives, Microsoft aims to redefine GitHub’s role in the development community and ensure it remains the go-to choice for developers navigating the new AI landscape.
