Satya Nadella says he’s ready to ‘exploit’ the new OpenAI deal

In a recent discussion with a Wall Street analyst, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the implications of the company's updated partnership with OpenAI on its financial landscape. He expressed confidence in the new agreement, stating, "This is a beneficial arrangement for all parties involved. Our collaboration with OpenAI is something we take seriously, always striving for a win-win scenario." Nadella highlighted that Microsoft maintains access to OpenAI’s intellectual property, including its advanced models and agent products, but now enjoys this access without ongoing payments to OpenAI. He pointed out the significance of their royalty-free access to OpenAI’s top-tier AI technologies through 2032, asserting, "We possess a frontier model, with all IP rights through ’32, and we fully intend to leverage it." Despite speculation that Microsoft's lack of exclusive access to OpenAI’s technology might diminish its competitive edge in AI, Nadella remained unfazed. Following the earnings report, which reflected the last full quarter under the previous agreement, Microsoft announced that its AI business has achieved an impressive annual revenue run rate exceeding $37 billion—a remarkable increase of 123% from the previous year. The CEO elaborated on the financial dynamics, mentioning that OpenAI is a significant customer across various sectors, not just in AI accelerators but across all computing services. He noted, "We aim to support them effectively, and we also have our equity position to consider." This equity position includes OpenAI's commitment to purchase over $250 billion in Microsoft cloud services, alongside Microsoft's 27% stake in OpenAI. Nadella also pointed out that enterprises increasingly prefer utilizing multiple AI models, suggesting that OpenAI's influence in the sector may not be as dominant as it once was. "We provide the widest array of models among hyperscalers, enabling customers to select the optimal model for their specific workloads, whether from OpenAI, Anthropic, open source, or others. Over 10,000 customers have utilized multiple models," he explained. As the situation unfolds, the true impact of this partnership remains to be seen. In the interim, Microsoft continues to demonstrate strong growth in its cloud services and profitability.
