In a significant shift in leadership, Microsoft has announced changes at the top of its gaming division. Phil Spencer, the current CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and Xbox President Sarah Bond are set to depart, paving the way for Asha Sharma, a former executive from Instacart and Meta, to take the helm. Sharma, who previously served as the president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product, signals a strong focus on integrating artificial intelligence into the gaming experience. Microsoft has already made strides in this area, exploring AI-driven gaming companions and experimenting with AI-generated content, including a recent, albeit imperfect, level from 'Quake II.' In an internal memo shared with The Verge, Sharma emphasized a vision for the future of gaming that includes innovative business models and new gameplay experiences. Notably, she remarked that while both monetization and AI will play crucial roles in shaping this future, the company will not compromise by inundating the gaming world with 'soulless AI slop.' 'Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us,' Sharma stated. Her memo outlined three key commitments, highlighting a dedication to developing beloved games for players and ensuring a strong focus on Xbox as a platform.
