Microsoft lays off nearly 5,000 employees across Xbox, commercial sales

Microsoft has announced significant layoffs, cutting approximately 4,800 positions, which amounts to 2.1% of its global workforce. This decision, made public on Monday, indicates a shift in the company's strategy as it adapts to changing market demands, particularly in its Xbox and commercial sales divisions. In a memo shared with staff, Amy Coleman, Microsoft's EVP and chief people officer, outlined the rationale behind the layoffs. She stated, "Our business is changing because the world around it is changing." Coleman emphasized that the rapid evolution of technology necessitates a transformation in how Microsoft operates. As customer needs shift and business models evolve, the company must realign its resources and roles to maintain its competitive edge. Coleman clarified that while the layoffs are not directly replacing jobs with AI, the impact of AI on workplace tasks is undeniable. She noted that automation is altering the nature of many roles, compelling employees to continuously learn and adapt to new skill requirements. This shift towards automation has left many workers facing uncertainty, raising concerns about job security. These layoffs coincide with Microsoft's recent establishment of its Frontier Company business unit, aimed at advancing enterprise AI solutions using existing AI technologies. This initiative is supported by a substantial $2.5 billion investment, reflecting a trend where job cuts are frequently linked to increased investment in AI. Regarding the gaming sector, Coleman mentioned, "We are restructuring to position the business for long-term success." She indicated that engineering teams throughout Microsoft would also be restructured to better meet customer expectations and drive future innovations. As part of this transition, four gaming studios will be placed under new management to ensure the continuity of their projects and intellectual property. The gaming industry is currently experiencing a contraction, which is juxtaposed with the rise of generative AI startups. Various companies have recently received significant funding to develop world models, further heightening competition in the gaming space. Earlier this year, Microsoft offered voluntary buyouts to around 5,500 employees in an effort to cultivate high-performing teams. In the previous year, Microsoft had already laid off about 15,000 employees, part of a broader trend in the tech industry where nearly 154,000 jobs have been eliminated in the first half of 2026 alone. Major tech companies, including Meta, Oracle, Amazon, and Cognizant, have also made substantial workforce reductions. Despite the layoffs, Microsoft has been actively working on strategies to retain talent by reskilling employees and helping them transition into new roles, with over 4,000 staff redeployed in the past year. As Microsoft navigates these turbulent changes, the company continues to seek ways to balance workforce adjustments with the evolving landscape of technology and business demands.
