Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi to exit after 35 years as company doubles down on AI

Yusuf Mehdi, who has served as Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, is set to leave the company after an impressive 35-year career. His announcement comes through an internal memo shared with employees, where he expressed his intention to depart following the conclusion of the next fiscal year. In his memo, Mehdi reflected on his time at Microsoft, describing it as filled with 'adventure, challenge, reinvention, and innovation.' He stated, 'I've decided the time is right to begin planning for my next adventure.' During the upcoming year, Mehdi plans to focus on reimagining Windows for the future, enhancing Microsoft 365 services, and advancing the One Copilot vision. Mehdi has played a pivotal role in overseeing product marketing for Microsoft's AI initiatives, notably the Microsoft Copilot. His exit aligns with the company’s strategic restructuring aimed at bolstering its AI efforts. Recently, Microsoft has made significant leadership changes, promoting Judson Althoff to oversee the commercial business and appointing Mustafa Suleyman as CEO of Microsoft AI. Reflecting on his departure, Mehdi likened the decision to planning a product launch, emphasizing the importance of setting a timeline to ensure a smooth transition. He mentioned that for now, the focus remains on Microsoft's mission, with future celebrations to come. Although Mehdi has not disclosed his next career move, speculation about retirement is circulating. He highlighted his close collaboration with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Marketing Officer Takeshi Numoto to ensure a seamless transition. Mehdi's journey with Microsoft began in 1992, during which he contributed to major product launches like Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, and played key roles in various divisions, including the Xbox team and the rollout of Windows 10 and Surface products.
