Microsoft has launched an innovative feature called Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, aimed at enhancing the web browsing experience through the power of artificial intelligence. This announcement, made on Monday, positions Microsoft to better contend with competitors who are also introducing AI-driven browsing solutions. Copilot Mode brings together various tasks such as web navigation, search, and tab management into a cohesive interface. Users will find that they can organize their online activities around specific topics, compare information across multiple tabs, and complete tasks without the hassle of switching between different web pages constantly. The feature introduces a single input box that combines chat, search, and navigation functionalities. In addition, the new tool accommodates voice commands, allowing for a hands-free browsing experience on both Windows and Mac computers. Microsoft emphasized that Copilot will only access browsing content when users opt to enable it, providing visual indicators to inform them when it is actively assisting in the background. Moreover, users will soon have the option to grant Copilot additional permissions, such as access to their browsing history and saved credentials. This will enable it to perform more complex tasks, including making reservations or managing daily activities more efficiently. This launch aligns with a growing trend toward AI-enhanced web tools. Notably, competitors such as Perplexity AI, supported by Nvidia, have recently introduced their own AI browser named Comet. Google has also added an “AI Mode” to its search engine earlier this year, reporting increased user engagement as a result. Reports suggest that OpenAI is working on its own AI-powered browser as well. Copilot Mode is being made available for free in supported regions, though it will be offered for a limited time. Users who prefer not to use the feature can easily disable it through the Edge settings menu.
