Microsoft says it has over 20M paid Copilot users, and they really are using it

Microsoft has made a significant announcement regarding its AI tool, Copilot, integrated within its M365 suite, including applications like Word, Excel, and Outlook. During a recent earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella revealed that Copilot has surpassed 20 million paid enterprise seats, dispelling doubts about its usage. The company has seen a remarkable increase in the number of organizations subscribing for extensive Copilot access, with over 50,000 seats now being utilized by multiple companies. Notable clients such as Bayer, Johnson & Johnson, Mercedes, and Roche have collectively acquired more than 90,000 seats. Furthermore, a recent partnership with Accenture will bring an impressive 740,000 additional seats into the fold, marking what Nadella referred to as “our largest Copilot win to date.” Engagement metrics reflect users’ growing reliance on Copilot, with a 20% quarter-over-quarter increase in queries per user. Nadella highlighted that the level of weekly engagement with Copilot is now comparable to that of Outlook, indicating that users are integrating it into their daily workflows. He also noted that Copilot’s functionality extends beyond a single model, offering users access to multiple AI models by default. This flexibility allows for intelligent routing and enhanced responses. For example, the integration of Anthropic’s Claude is one of the advancements in this area. Industry experts are taking notice, with Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss commenting on the impressive user metrics for Microsoft 365 Copilot, suggesting they exceed many expectations. Additionally, Microsoft has transitioned the default experience to include an ‘Agent mode’ across Copilot, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, enabling users to perform multi-step actions seamlessly within their documents. Nadella emphasized this capability as a revolutionary way to delegate tasks and enhance productivity through Copilot.
