Microsoft CFO calls for 'intensity' in an internal memo, after blowout earnings

In a recent communication to staff, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, Amy Hood, emphasized the need for heightened focus and determination as the company gears up for the upcoming fiscal year. This message comes on the heels of a remarkable quarterly profit of $27 billion, prompting Hood to call for what she described as 'intensity, clarity, and bold execution.' Hood's quarterly emails, which accompany the company’s financial disclosures, typically reiterate key metrics and performance highlights. However, they also serve as a platform for leaders to convey essential priorities and expectations. This time, she underscored the significance of Microsoft’s products and services, noting that revenue from Azure has surpassed $75 billion, marking a 34% increase — a first for the company to disclose such a figure. Hood echoed sentiments from CEO Satya Nadella, who highlighted critical priorities for FY26, including security, quality, and AI transformation. 'Both the pace of change and customer expectations are continuously accelerating,' Hood remarked, reinforcing the urgency behind these initiatives. Interestingly, Hood's memo did not address the significant workforce reductions of over 10,000 employees that have occurred this year, despite the record profits. This omission follows Nadella's attempt to clarify what he called the 'enigma of success,' which has left some employees feeling unsatisfied with the rationale for the cuts. As the tech industry faces mounting performance pressures, Hood's call for 'intensity' resonates as a common theme among major players. 'I’m excited about what we’ll accomplish together as we lead in this next frontier of innovation,' she concluded, emphasizing the importance of driving impact for customers, partners, and communities globally.
