Microsoft's Satya Nadella says job cuts have been 'weighing heavily' on him

In a recent communication to employees, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed the profound impact that recent layoffs have had on him personally. This announcement comes in the wake of the tech giant's decision to eliminate over 15,000 positions in 2025, a move that has echoed throughout the industry. Nadella addressed the layoffs directly, acknowledging the weight of the situation. "Before anything else, I want to speak to what's been weighing heavily on me, and what I know many of you are thinking about: the recent job eliminations," he stated in a memo circulated on Thursday. This sentiment follows a significant drop in the workforce that included around 9,000 cuts just a week prior. Despite the challenging circumstances, Microsoft's stock saw a surge, closing above $500 for the first time on July 9, indicating investor confidence amidst the turbulence. As of June 2024, Microsoft employed 228,000 workers, although it has yet to disclose updated numbers post-layoffs. Nadella pointed to the complexities of success within the tech sector, stating, "This is the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value. Progress isn't linear. It's dynamic, sometimes dissonant, and always demanding. But it's also a new opportunity for us to shape, lead through, and have greater impact than ever before." These layoffs are part of a broader trend affecting the technology industry, which has seen over 80,000 job cuts this year alone. Recruit Holdings, for example, announced it would let go of 1,300 employees from its human resources technology division, attributing the decision to the influence of artificial intelligence. On social media, some Microsoft employees have expressed their disillusionment regarding the company's recent decisions. One employee voiced their concerns on LinkedIn, stating, "I have loved working for this company, still do, but this has done so much damage to that loyalty because it has shown that Microsoft's espoused values do not apply to business decisions at the macro level." Despite the layoffs, Microsoft continues to be a leader in the tech arena, particularly as its Windows and Office products remain dominant players, and Azure cloud services have experienced accelerated growth thanks to the demand for AI capabilities. In his memo, Nadella also highlighted the need for Microsoft to evolve its mission to align with the rising influence of AI. "We must reimagine our mission for a new era," he emphasized. "What does empowerment look like in the era of AI? It's not just about building tools for specific roles or tasks. It's about building tools that empower everyone to create their own tools. That's the shift we are driving — from a software factory to an intelligence engine empowering every person and organization to build whatever they need to achieve." Microsoft is set to release its fiscal fourth-quarter results on Wednesday, an event that is highly anticipated given the recent developments.
