In a significant address in New Delhi, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s Chairman and CEO, launched the company's three-day 'India AI Tour'. Moving past the impressive $17.5 billion investment announcement, Nadella focused on the actionable steps needed to embed artificial intelligence (AI) into the fabric of India’s growth. This monumental investment, announced during Nadella's recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks Microsoft's largest commitment in Asia, aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure and skills within the country over the next four years. According to Nadella, this financial backing is crucial for India's ambition to evolve into an 'AI-first future'. A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of several strategic partnerships with major Indian firms and public sector organizations. These collaborations are set to expedite the integration of advanced AI technologies into vital economic sectors. Noteworthy partnerships include alliances with Mahindra Group, Apollo Hospitals, Bajaj Finserv, and RailTel, which is focused on e-governance solutions. For example, the partnership with Apollo Hospitals aims to harness AI for research into disease progression and to enhance healthcare service delivery. Nadella emphasized the importance of skills development and social impact, announcing a doubling of Microsoft’s commitment to upskill 20 million individuals in AI by 2030. This initiative is designed to prepare India’s extensive workforce for the opportunities presented by the global AI landscape. In a bid for inclusive growth, Nadella discussed the integration of Microsoft AI into government platforms such as e-Shram and the National Career Service (NCS). This effort aims to support approximately 310 million informal sector workers in India by providing AI-based tools for skill development and employment services. Reinforcing the theme of 'AI diffusion at population scale', Nadella reiterated Microsoft's dedication to facilitating India's shift from digital public infrastructure to a comprehensive AI public infrastructure over the next decade, ensuring that the technological transformation benefits every citizen. The keynote was succeeded by a dialogue with Debjani Ghosh from NITI Aayog, followed by insights from Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India & South Asia, who discussed the future of AI adoption across industries. Rajiv Kumar, President & Managing Director of IDC, also shared his perspectives, along with other key industry leaders, underlining the transformative potential of AI in the workplace.
