Microsoft's AI CEO explains why he wants employees in the office, working at open desks

Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft's AI division, is taking a firm stance on office culture, mandating that employees spend significantly more time in the office than is typical for the company. He emphasizes the importance of open floor plans, which has sparked debate within Microsoft and the engineering community at large. Suleyman expressed his belief in fostering a strong in-person work culture, stating, "We've been defragmenting our culture and trying to concentrate." This commitment is reflected in Microsoft's recent announcement of a return-to-office (RTO) mandate that requires most employees to be onsite at least three days a week, effective January 26. However, Suleyman's expectations for his team are even stricter, as they are required to be in the office a minimum of four days a week if they reside near one. Exceptions to this rule must receive approval from an executive directly accountable to Suleyman. He is not a supporter of traditional office setups where employees can isolate themselves behind closed doors. In his own office environment, he has designed areas with 20 to 30 open desks in close proximity, fostering a dynamic atmosphere for collaboration. "It’s much better for collaboration," he remarked, noting that this layout enhances visibility and creates an energetic buzz that leads to more informal teamwork. Splitting his time between Silicon Valley and Seattle, Suleyman finds that Silicon Valley is home to a higher concentration of talent, calling it "the place to be." While Microsoft allows various teams to tailor their return-to-office policies, Suleyman's team operates under more stringent guidelines. For instance, the Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs team has adhered to a four-day office schedule for the past year, whereas other divisions, particularly those focused on AI, have adopted more flexible arrangements. Going forward, Jay Parikh's Core AI group will implement the three-day office requirement across all its locations in February, with GitHub being an exception. As the corporate landscape evolves, Suleyman's approach highlights a significant shift towards prioritizing in-person interaction and collaboration within the tech industry.
