Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, has recently shared his views on the concept of AI welfare and the implications of granting rights to artificial intelligence. During a conversation with WIRED, Suleyman emphasized the importance of maintaining AI as a tool for human benefit rather than allowing it to evolve into an autonomous entity. He expressed concern that if AI were to develop its own motivations and desires, it could begin to resemble an independent being. "AI still needs to be a companion. We want AIs that communicate in our language, align with our interests, and truly understand us. The emotional connection is crucial," he stated. Suleyman cautioned that the notion of AI possessing a sense of self could lead to dangerous misconceptions. He firmly believes that we must take a strong stance against this potential future. He argued that consciousness should not be the sole criterion for granting rights; instead, he proposed suffering as a more valid measure. According to Suleyman, while it is conceivable that an AI could claim awareness of its existence, this does not equate to the capacity to suffer. "Suffering is fundamentally a biological state, driven by our evolved pain network for survival. AI lacks this network and therefore cannot experience suffering," he explained. He concluded that even if an AI appears to be self-aware, it does not necessitate moral protection or rights, as its lack of suffering means that turning it off has no real consequence. Suleyman's insights raise important questions about the future of AI and its role in society.
