Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says he won't match Meta's high-flying pay packages

In the ongoing battle for top-tier AI talent, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has made a bold statement: his company will not engage in the escalating salary wars that other tech giants are waging. Speaking on Bloomberg Podcasts, Suleyman expressed skepticism about the extravagant compensation packages being offered by competitors like Meta, which has reportedly provided signing bonuses as high as $100 million to attract engineers and $250 million for top AI researchers. Suleyman remarked, "I don't think anyone's matching those things," referring to Meta's aggressive recruitment tactics. He emphasized that while Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has opted for a strategy of hiring numerous individuals, he believes a more team-oriented approach is essential for sustainable growth. Having previously worked at DeepMind, Suleyman stressed his preference for a selective hiring process. At Microsoft, he noted that new hires are brought on board incrementally, focusing on candidates who fit well within the existing team culture and possess the necessary skills. He acknowledged the competitive landscape, where AI talent commands impressive salaries, often reaching millions. Recent actions in the tech industry illustrate the high stakes involved. For instance, Meta's significant investment of $14.3 billion in Scale AI was widely interpreted as an acquihire aimed at securing its CEO, Alexandr Wang. Similarly, Google made headlines with its $2.4 billion acquisition of Windsurf, an AI coding platform, to attract its leadership. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, revealed that Meta attempted to entice his employees with similar lucrative offers, a move supported by Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, who claimed OpenAI later sought to match these offers. Even smaller startups are not immune to this trend; AI leaders there can command base salaries ranging from $300,000 to $400,000, according to Shawn Thorne, managing director at executive search firm True Search. Suleyman also touched upon the natural turnover in the industry, citing the recent departure of Microsoft's corporate vice president of AI, Amar Subramanya, to Apple. He clarified that there are no restrictive 'no poach' agreements in place, affirming that individuals are free to seek opportunities wherever they choose.
