Microsoft to invest $17.5B in India by 2029 as AI race accelerates

Microsoft has unveiled a substantial plan to invest $17.5 billion in India within the next four years, aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services across the country. This significant investment, announced on Tuesday, is the company’s largest in Asia and is set to support the establishment of new data centers, AI infrastructure, and workforce development initiatives from 2026 to 2029. This commitment follows Microsoft's earlier investment of $3 billion in India this January. As global tech companies intensify efforts to expand their data centers and AI capabilities, India has surfaced as a vital market. The nation boasts a rapidly growing pool of internet users and smartphone owners, making it a coveted target for major firms like Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, all of whom are eager to cater to the increasing demand for cloud services and AI technologies from various sectors, including businesses, startups, and government agencies. The timing of this announcement coincides with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's visit to India, during which he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A highlight of the investment strategy is the upcoming launch of a new data center region in Hyderabad by mid-2026, which will encompass three availability zones, a development described as comparable in size to two Eden Gardens stadiums. Microsoft plans to continue enhancing its existing data centers in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune as part of this initiative. Furthermore, Microsoft is collaborating with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to embed advanced AI features into two key digital platforms: e-Shram and the National Career Service. These platforms aim to deliver AI-powered services to over 310 million informal sector workers, offering features such as automated resume creation and personalized job matching through Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. In addition to these developments, Microsoft is introducing new sovereign cloud solutions tailored for Indian businesses, including a Sovereign Public Cloud and a Sovereign Private Cloud, designed to meet regulatory standards and support high-performance workloads. The company’s training initiatives are also gaining momentum, with the “ADVANTA(I)GE India” program having already trained 5.6 million individuals since January, significantly ahead of its goal to train 10 million by 2030. Microsoft aims to double its initial target, seeking to equip 20 million Indians with foundational AI skills by 2030. This investment follows Google's recent announcement of a $15 billion plan to establish an AI hub and data-center infrastructure in India, further emphasizing the competition among tech giants in this rapidly evolving market. With its vast internet subscriber base, burgeoning smartphone usage, and robust startup ecosystem, India is becoming an increasingly attractive location for global tech investments. Despite the challenges posed by inconsistent power supply and high operational costs, the Indian government is actively encouraging major tech investments, framing large-scale AI and data-center projects as essential to its economic strategy.
