“Surface Laptop 5G” for businesses shows Microsoft isn’t done with Intel yet

Microsoft continues to cater to the needs of businesses and traditional PC users with the introduction of the Surface Laptop 5G. While the tech giant has embraced Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon X-series chips for its more affordable Surface models, it recognizes that many users still prefer or need Intel or AMD-based x86 systems. The Surface Laptop 5G is essentially an enhanced version of the existing 13.8-inch Surface Laptop, now featuring integrated 5G cellular capabilities. Although its exterior remains largely unchanged from the non-5G variant, significant internal modifications have been made. Microsoft has incorporated a 'dynamic antenna system' along with a 'custom multi-layered laminate' designed to enhance signal strength. Powered by the Core Ultra Series 2 chips, codenamed Lunar Lake, the Surface Laptop 5G also boasts Intel Arc integrated GPUs and neural processing units (NPUs) that support advanced features in Windows 11, such as the enhanced Copilot+ functionalities. This new model primarily targets businesses that rely on software requiring a conventional x86 PC. While many applications run smoothly through Prism, the x86-to-Arm translation layer in Windows 11, there are still certain device drivers and specialized applications that may face compatibility hurdles on Arm-based devices, making the Surface Laptop 5G a crucial option for those users.
