Microsoft rolls out Windows 11 25h2 preview build with smoother updates

Microsoft has officially released the initial preview build of the Windows 11 25H2 update for Insider participants. This version primarily aims to enhance the efficiency of update delivery and support across various editions. One of the most notable changes in this build is a significant shift in Microsoft's support lifecycle. The Enterprise and Education editions will now benefit from a three-year support window, while Pro and similar editions will maintain a two-year update schedule. This strategic update ensures that all users can stay secure and benefit from the latest improvements. The update installer has also undergone a transformation, boasting a 40 percent reduction in package size compared to previous versions. This means that downloads are quicker and require less data—an essential upgrade for those with slower internet connections or limited data plans. At the heart of this refinement is an innovative update strategy known as feature updates via servicing. Rather than necessitating major reinstallation processes, Microsoft has introduced enablement packages that allow users to update their systems with just a single reboot, akin to the usual monthly updates. This minimizes disruption and downtime, making the experience smoother for users. Interestingly, the 25H2 version is built from the same source code as the previous 24H2, promoting better compatibility and reducing potential conflicts. It presents itself more as a refinement rather than a complete overhaul of the system. To start testing this preview, users need to enroll in the Windows Insider Program and select the Dev Channel. From there, they can navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and activate the preview features. The 25H2 update will then be downloaded and installed, allowing users to explore its new capabilities. While the full public release is anticipated in the latter half of 2025, insiders can get a head start on testing and familiarization. For those who prefer to wait, the public rollout of version 24H2 is set to commence on October 1, with 25H2 following later in the year. This rollout reflects Microsoft's continual commitment to enhancing performance, simplifying update processes, and extending support, positioning the 2025 update as one of the most user-friendly yet.
