Microsoft launches Scout, an OpenClaw-inspired personal assistant

In early 2026, the AI landscape was dramatically reshaped by OpenClaw, captivating many leading technologists with its groundbreaking approach to AI. Although momentum slowed after OpenAI acquired its creator, the ripples of its influence continue to resonate, particularly at Microsoft. Today, Microsoft has introduced Scout, a cutting-edge AI assistant designed to integrate seamlessly into the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, harnessing the dynamic capabilities of the OpenClaw framework. Scout is envisioned as an ever-present digital companion, tailored to adapt to individual user preferences. During a demonstration, users can personalize their Scout, which was affectionately dubbed 'Sebastian' in the session, and provide continuous feedback to refine its performance. Omar Shahine, Vice President of Scout, emphasized the goal of creating an assistant that evolves alongside its user. "We all have unique working styles, and Scout learns these nuances, transforming them into lasting memories and skills," Shahine explained. As a result, the assistant becomes more proficient, gaining a deeper understanding of user preferences and exercising its judgment more effectively. Scout is accessible through Microsoft’s Frontier program, though it requires a GitHub Copilot subscription for use. It is cloud-based yet functions across desktop and web platforms, enhancing connectivity to calendars, inboxes, and other essential tools. Initially, Scout will feature built-in skills for tasks such as calendar management and meeting agenda preparation. However, Shahine anticipates that the true value will emerge from the unique skills users develop themselves. To address potential security concerns linked to autonomous AI agents, Scout incorporates robust security measures, including a “policy conformance system” that continuously monitors compliance with operational guidelines while generating an audit trail for transparency. Scout is part of a broader suite of AI innovations unveiled at Build, which also includes Project Solara, an updated version of Copilot, and a new reasoning AI model.
