Microsoft’s new 10,000-year data storage medium: glass

Archival data storage presents numerous challenges, particularly the need for a medium that is both highly dense and remarkably stable over centuries. Ideally, this medium should also require no energy when not in use. While various concepts have been proposed, including the use of DNA, Microsoft Research has recently introduced a simpler yet innovative solution: etching data into glass. Glass is known for its physical and chemical stability, making it a promising candidate for long-term data storage. In a groundbreaking announcement featured in the latest issue of Nature, Microsoft detailed Project Silica, which showcases a functioning system capable of reading and writing data onto small glass slabs with an impressive density exceeding one megabyte per cubic millimeter. Contrary to the common perception of glass as a fragile material, this project highlights its potential for durability. Glass is actually a category of materials that can be chemically formulated to achieve remarkable stability. The researchers have developed a type of glass that is thermally and chemically resistant, effectively protecting against moisture, temperature changes, and electromagnetic interference. While careful handling is still necessary to prevent damage, glass offers the ideal stability needed for preserving data over an extended period. The process of embedding data into glass involves etching, which has historically been a slow procedure. However, advancements in femtosecond laser technology—lasers capable of emitting rapid pulses lasting only 10-15 seconds—have revolutionized this process. These lasers can produce millions of pulses per second, significantly speeding up the etching process and allowing for concentrated data storage in small areas. With Project Silica, Microsoft is pioneering an exciting new frontier in data storage, potentially securing our digital information for millennia to come.
