Microsoft's big event was all about the 'explosion' of AI agents

At the recent Build conference, Microsoft showcased an exciting leap in artificial intelligence, emphasizing the surge of 'agentic AI'. Kevin Scott, the company's Chief Technology Officer and AI executive vice president, reported a remarkable increase in daily active users of Microsoft's AI agents, which have more than doubled since last year's event. Scott elaborated on the concept of agentic AI, describing it as technology that allows users to delegate tasks to intelligent agents. While acknowledging that these AI agents are still in their infancy, he expressed optimism about their future developments, predicting enhancements in both capability and cost-effectiveness within the next year. During the keynote, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella discussed the creation of an expansive 'agentic web' and the tools necessary to support it, leveraging Microsoft Azure. The company introduced several new AI capabilities across its platforms, including Windows, Office, and Azure. One significant announcement was the new Azure Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) agent, set to be integrated with GitHub Copilot. Nadella highlighted how these agents can act as reliable AI partners, alleviating burdens for developers by handling complex tasks autonomously, reducing the need for late-night troubleshooting. The event also featured virtual appearances by prominent AI leaders, such as OpenAI's Sam Altman, Tesla's Elon Musk, and Nvidia's Jensen Huang. Altman discussed the launch of Codex, an AI designed to assist programmers with coding tasks, describing it as a pivotal moment in software engineering. Musk shared insights from his early experiences with Microsoft software and discussed the capabilities of Grok, an AI model developed by xAI. Additionally, Microsoft introduced 'Copilot Tuning', a new feature that allows organizations to develop customized AI agents using their own data. In his closing remarks, Nadella emphasized the company's mission to integrate AI throughout the software development process, aiming to create opportunities that empower users to achieve their goals. He shared inspiring stories, such as a father who utilized Foundry to expedite a diagnosis for his son and a South American startup that gamified wellness through an innovative app.
