Microsoft has announced the introduction of a new premium tier for its Office productivity suite, significantly raising the price by 65% as part of its strategy to attract enterprise customers to its AI features. The newly launched Microsoft 365 E7 is priced at $99 per user, per month, compared to the existing E5 subscription at $60. This upgraded package includes various advanced tools such as the $30 Copilot AI, $12 Entra identity services, and the new $15 Agent 365, specifically designed for managing AI agents within organizations. With an investment exceeding $100 billion in data center infrastructure over the past year, including the acquisition of Nvidia chips essential for powering AI models, Microsoft is keen to showcase a return on this substantial investment through its AI offerings. Additionally, new features like Copilot Cowork, developed in collaboration with AI model innovator Anthropic, are set to enhance productivity by automating complex tasks such as scheduling emails and preparing for meetings. The Copilot Cowork will be available as a research preview this month to clients enrolled in Microsoft's Frontier program, which gives early access to new AI functionalities. This rollout follows updates to Anthropic's own AI services, which have raised concerns among investors regarding potential competition in the software market. Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business, expressed optimism that the introduction of the E7 tier and Copilot upgrades will encourage more businesses to adopt these advanced tools. He noted that while many organizations currently utilize the E5 plan, the enhancements offered by E7 are likely to motivate upgrades and boost overall productivity in the agentic landscape. Despite a reported slowdown in the growth of new subscriptions for Microsoft 365 commercial products, which rose by 6% in the last quarter, the company is increasingly generating more revenue from each user, particularly through Copilot features. In January, CEO Satya Nadella shared that there were 15 million paid Copilot seats, amounting to only 3% of the total commercial subscriptions. Gartner analyst Alastair Woolcock emphasized the importance of integrating identity, management, and security tools within the E7 offering, allowing large enterprises to deploy AI safely and effectively. He pointed out that companies prefer comprehensive solutions over multiple standalone services. Analysts from Jefferies reiterated their positive outlook on Microsoft’s stock, highlighting the company's belief in a significant growth opportunity within its 365 product line, supported by a robust user base of approximately 450 million. They noted that, despite the emergence of third-party AI solutions, the bulk of AI-driven productivity is still occurring within Microsoft’s ecosystem of applications like Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint.
