Microsoft is exploring the integration of features similar to the OpenClaw agent within its Microsoft 365 Copilot tool. This initiative, confirmed to The Information, focuses on providing enterprise customers with improved security controls, distinguishing it from the often riskier open-source OpenClaw. OpenClaw is designed to operate locally on a user's machine, enabling the creation of agents that can perform various tasks autonomously. Should Microsoft develop its own version of this technology, it would complement a series of agent-driven tools the company has recently introduced. Notably, in March, Microsoft launched Copilot Cowork, which not only generates search results but also interacts with Microsoft 365 applications to execute tasks directly. Powered by its proprietary "Work IQ" technology, Cowork aims to tailor the user experience across Microsoft 365 applications. Furthermore, Microsoft has partnered with Anthropic to incorporate Claude as an option for Cowork, further enhancing its capabilities. While OpenClaw supports a variety of models, Claude has become a popular choice among its users. Unlike Cowork, which operates in the cloud, Microsoft is considering whether its forthcoming version of Claw will function locally. The company has indicated that this new agent aims to provide continuous assistance, effectively acting as an always-active version of 365 Copilot that can manage multistep tasks over extended periods. As OpenClaw gains traction among users, particularly on Mac Mini devices, Microsoft's motivations include not only enhancing security but also capitalizing on the growing demand for local task management solutions. The tech giant is anticipated to showcase this new agent or an enhanced version of its existing tools during the Microsoft Build conference in June. As inquiries about this project continue, updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
