Microsoft has launched a groundbreaking concept known as "vibe working" within its Microsoft 365 Copilot suite, introducing new functionalities like Agent Mode in Office applications and the Office Agent in Copilot chat. This fresh approach aims to enhance productivity by merging human input with AI capabilities. The newly introduced Agent Mode is currently available in Excel and Word, with PowerPoint support anticipated shortly. This feature empowers users to engage in what Microsoft terms "agentic productivity," allowing them to provide simple prompts to Copilot while the system adeptly manages multi-step tasks. In Excel, Agent Mode utilizes OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models to simplify complex data modeling. The tool is capable of generating formulas, creating visual representations, and fine-tuning outputs through iterative evaluations. Microsoft’s benchmarks reveal that Copilot in Excel's Agent Mode achieved an impressive accuracy rate of 57.2% on SpreadsheetBench tasks. Notable applications of this feature include the development of financial reports, loan calculators, and personal budget trackers. Meanwhile, in Word, Agent Mode transforms the writing process into an interactive experience, which Microsoft refers to as "vibe writing." Users can prompt Copilot to summarize, edit, and format documents, making the act of content creation feel more like an engaging conversation rather than a mere task. In addition, Microsoft has introduced the Office Agent within Copilot chat, capable of generating Word documents and PowerPoint presentations directly from chat prompts. Built on Anthropic models, this feature seeks to enhance AI-generated materials by clarifying user intent, conducting web research, and producing structured outputs that can be collaboratively refined. Suggested scenarios for this tool include creating business planning presentations, retirement savings guides, and market trend reports. For those interested in these new features, Agent Mode in Excel and Word is currently available to Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed customers and Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers participating in the Frontier program, starting with the web versions. Desktop access is expected to follow soon. The Office Agent is gradually being rolled out to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in the United States via Copilot on the web in English. Microsoft envisions these updates as the initial step in its journey towards a more collaborative AI experience in everyday productivity.
