In a groundbreaking move, Microsoft has declared its largest investment in the Asian region, committing a staggering $17.5 billion over the next four years, specifically from 2026 to 2029. This initiative aims to dramatically enhance India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure, centering around three pivotal areas: scalability, skill development, and data sovereignty. A significant portion of this investment is directed towards establishing a robust and secure infrastructure. Microsoft plans to launch its largest hyperscale cloud region in Hyderabad, with operations set to commence in mid-2026. This new data center will complement the expansion of three existing facilities located in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune, thereby offering businesses and public institutions improved network resilience and increased options. In response to the government's emphasis on data security, Microsoft is also rolling out Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud solutions tailored for Indian clients. Notably, the company has confirmed that its Microsoft 365 Copilot service will exclusively process data within India by the end of 2025, enhancing governance and compliance in regulated sectors. This investment is not just about infrastructure; it aims to foster widespread AI adoption across the country. Microsoft is enhancing two major digital platforms for the Ministry of Labour and Employment: e-Shram and the National Career Service (NCS). This initiative is poised to benefit over 310 million informal workers by providing AI-assisted job matching features. Moreover, Microsoft is doubling its commitment to train 20 million Indians in essential AI skills by 2030, collaborating with both the government and industry to broaden access to opportunities. Union Minister of Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed strong support for this initiative, stating, "As AI transforms the digital economy, India is dedicated to fostering innovation grounded in trust and sovereignty. Microsoft’s monumental investment marks India’s emergence as a dependable technology partner on the global stage. This collaboration will redefine standards and facilitate the nation’s transition from digital public infrastructure to AI public infrastructure." Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, emphasized the company's long-standing relationship with India, stating, “As India embarks on its AI-first future, we take pride in being a trusted ally in enhancing the infrastructure, innovation, and opportunities needed to empower a billion aspirations. Building on our earlier $3 billion investment from January 2025, this new commitment of $17.5 billion, coupled with our deep involvement in India’s tech ecosystem, aims to transform the nation’s AI ambitions into tangible benefits for every citizen.” This substantial funding builds upon an earlier $3 billion investment, further accelerating AI adoption throughout the country.
