Microsoft Edge is now an AI browser with launch of ‘Copilot Mode’

In response to the growing interest in AI-enhanced web browsing, Microsoft has introduced a cutting-edge feature in its Edge browser known as Copilot Mode. Launched on Monday, this innovative addition enables users to surf the internet with AI assistance, designed to help understand their research needs and even predict their next steps. The functionality of Copilot Mode is currently in an experimental phase, with Microsoft stating that it remains an opt-in feature for Mac and PC users who have access to Copilot. Users can expect a refreshed tab page that facilitates searches, chats, and navigation, all while benefitting from AI guidance. One exciting aspect of Copilot Mode is its interactive capabilities. For instance, users can ask the AI to modify a recipe they're viewing, such as suggesting vegan alternatives. This eliminates the need to copy and paste text into a chatbot, streamlining the process significantly. Additionally, users can request the AI to summarize the recipe, bypassing lengthy narratives that often accompany online cooking instructions. Beyond simple inquiries, Copilot is designed to manage various tasks for users, including booking appointments, compiling shopping lists, and drafting written content. This advancement represents a significant stride in the evolution of AI-assisted browsing, although it remains to be seen whether consumers will fully embrace this new technology. The aim of Copilot is to simplify everyday online tasks, like making reservations on travel sites. However, the efficiency of communicating with an AI may vary based on individual familiarity with the platform. Voice input capabilities are included, catering to users who may struggle with traditional navigation or have limited mobility. Looking ahead, Microsoft envisions Copilot as a research companion, capable of accessing open tabs with user consent to better assist with comparisons, such as flight or hotel pricing. While these functionalities mirror those of existing AI chatbots, integrating them directly into the browser could expedite the process of addressing user inquiries. In future updates, Copilot will proactively suggest next steps on projects or research topics, enhancing user productivity. Microsoft emphasizes that users will maintain control over their data, with clear options to enable or disable the feature that allows the AI to access browsing information. However, the prospect of an AI that can observe and interact with users during their online activities may raise privacy concerns for some individuals.
